RESTON, VA, -- Bell Atlantic today announced the first retailers -- Lands'
End, Nordstrom, and JCPenney -- to participate in a market trial of its
STARGAZERsm video-on-demand service. Interactive home shopping will be
one of the features of the STARGAZER service that will be tested by
Bell Atlantic Video Services Company with 1,000 customers this winter,
pending regulatory approval. Bell Atlantic Video Services is a unit of
Bell Atlantic Corporation.
"Each of the participating retailers is a leader in its respective market,
bringing unique value to our customers," said Stuart C. Johnson, chairman
and chief executive officer, Bell Atlantic Video Services. "Each will
play a significant role in helping shape the Stargazer shopping environ-
ment."
"We're going to find out how and for what customers want to shop over a
TV screen, as compared to using a catalog or walking about a shopping
mall," said Michael Rabicoff, Director, Bell Atlantic Video Services.
Shoppers will be able to navigate through the STARGAZER environment into
the retail "store" of their choice, view product videos and make a purchase.
Initially, customers will place their orders by dialing an 800 number that
connects them to the retailer's fulfillment center. In 1995, on-line
ordering will be phased in and tested with each shopping application.
Interactive shopping should be ready for commercial deployment by 1996
and will be part of the service line-up Bell Atlantic intends to offer
to nearly 8.5 million consumers by the end of the decade.
The STARGAZER interactive shopping service will be Bell Atlantic's latest
entry into the $60-billion-a-year home shopping market. Bell Atlantic
recently completed a test of compact disc-interactive-based electronic
yellow page listings with 300 customers in Northern Virginia last year
and recently tested MicroMall catalog kiosks in Chicago. Bell Atlantic
is working on plans to take its CD-I product into a networked interactive
environment next year.
With the STARGAZER service, Bell Atlantic Video Services will be one of
the participants in a trial of Bell Atlantic's video dial tone service,
also slated to begin later this year. The video dial tone market trial
test, which awaits federal approval, will include 2,000 Northern Virginia
consumers and several video providers.
